SDWorks puts students’ design on market

Mirror Watch from SDWorks

With the help of SDWorks, a unique business platform attached to the School of Design (SD) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the award-winning LED Mirror Watch designed by a young promising talent has been launched in the market.

This ingenious design has recently took Silver in the 2009 Spark Awards and won the 2009 Most Successful Design Award. Designed by an SD graduate Mr Lai Cheuk-kee in his second year Fashion Accessories class, the concept of Mirror Watch focuses on dual functionality, transforming a watch into a stylish useful mirror when not in use. Public Design Paper on Hong Kong Engineer

PolyU Design’s Ir Prof Kin Wai Michael Siu’s street bollard design paper was published in the January 2010 issue of premier journal Hong Kong Engineer. Look for the paper here: http://www.hkengineer.org.hk/program/home/article.php?aid=5127&volid=115

Hundreds of flexible removable bollards by Ir Prof Kin Wai Michael Siu are now installed around Hong Kong such as Causeway Bay and Chai Wan.  The design is a collaboration between PolyU and the Hong Kong Highways Department.

Paddling Home on Victoria Harbor

Our Assistant Professor Kacey Wong set sail on the Victoria Harbor with his Paddling Home on 16 January, 2010. The Paddling Home was an installation at the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale where Alvin Yip, also an Assistant Professor in the Environment & Interior discipline, was co-chair of the Biennale’s steering committee. Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Digital Media – Information Session

It gives us great pleasure to introduce to you our BA (Hons) in Digital Media, which is a UGC-funded 2-year top up degree program, targets for graduates and final year students from a Higher Diploma or Associate Degree in a relevant discipline (either in animation or video production field).

The program is designed to train people to be idea driven, to be entrepreneurial with their creation, to properly gauge the balance between risks and potential, and to creatively and successfully lead the production process.

We are now inviting applications for admission for 2010-11 academic year. An Information Seminar will be held on 23 January 2010 (Saturday) at 10:00am in Room PQ002, G/F, Core P, PolyU Campus. The seminar will provide general introduction to the programme, showcase of student work and current student’s sharing.
