World Graphics Day: Why Do You Value Design?

Yesterday was the annual World Graphics Day, the day when ICOGRADA celebrates its birthday and an occasion for designers to reflect and “contribute to greater understanding between people and help build bridges where divides and inequities exist.”*

And this year, they are asking designers all around the world, “Why do we value design?” Well, for me, it’s more like “Do you value design?” If you do, then you can ask why. These answers require a bit of thinking indeed. It’s easy to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but ‘why?’ That is the gut of the question.

Why Do You Value Design?

I do value design because it adds depth into our lives. When done properly and with respect, it is a functional art piece. Many aspire to become designers without fully understanding the dedication, passion and hard work put into a well-typeset poster or an ergonomic task chair or a naturally ventilated space. Design is powerful! It adds value to my life and in return, i value design.
